DICK CAVETT
Stars in HELLMAN –v- MCCARTHY
March 1, 2015

TV icon Dick Cavett stars as -- you guessed it -- Dick Cavett in Hellman v. McCarthy, a live stage play that dramatizes one of the most explosive moments in talk show history and its fiery fallout. In 1979, during an episode of Cavett's lively PBS interview PROGRAM, Mary McCarthy, the venerable critic and writer, called fellow literary titan Lillian Hellman "dishonest," famously elaborating that "every word she writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the.'" Hellman later sued, igniting a firestorm that swept the literary world and sparked this witty play by Brian Richard Mori. Alongside Cavett, whose "astringently funny presence," the New York Times declared, " ... adds layers of charm and verisimilitude." Marcia Rodd and Rowan Michael Meyer reprise their highly-acclaimed roles from the New York stage.  Rodd plays Mary McCarthy “with a firmness of purpose along with a sliver or two of vulnerability” (NYT)and Meyer plays the most lovable character in the play as Hellman's caretaker.  Flora PLUMB plays Hellman.  Martin Thompson and John Combs round out the cast in Hellman v. McCarthy Feb. 6-28 at Theatre40 and at the Saban Theatre March 1. The plays is directed by television veteran Howard Storm who has over 50 episodes of Mork and Mindy to his credit along with many, many other television credits.
