Chris Isaak
November 30, 2014

Singer/songwriter/musician/actor Chris Isaak makes his debut appearance on the Saban Theatre stage, and this hepcat should fit right in with the retro architecture at this spectacular venue.  Isaak’s music magically recaptures the brilliance of of the classic Sun sound, while also getting down to the heart and soul of his own deeply rooted musical identity.  In fact, the late Sam Phillips, the genius behind Sun Records, had this to say about Isaak, “very talented, and his music is so damned honest.  It’s incredible.”

Isaak’s music has appeared in scores of films and television shows, as has Mr. Isaak himself.  He starred in Showtime’s The Chris Isaak Show, and has appeared in numerous films, including Little Buddha, Twin Peaks, Married To The Mob, Silence Of The Lambs, and more.

Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County
December 4, 2014

The southern gothic, supernatural musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County was written by celebrated suspense author Stephen King, with music by Grammy Award-winning John Mellencamp and produced by Grammy and Academy Award-winning T Bone Burnett. This extraordinary collaboration 16 years in the making is a haunting tale of fraternal love, lust, jealousy and revenge, performed by an ensemble cast of 15 actors and a four-piece live band, comprised of members of John Mellencamp’s band. The staging of Ghost Brothers is an amalgam of different styles – both old fashioned, resembling an old-style radio show, and yet, modern and unique in its interactive use of storytelling, music and singing to move the macabre Ghost Brothers story forward.  The story goes that Joe McCandless saw his two older brothers battle over a girl which ended in the unfortunate deaths of all three. Now as an adult, with two boys of his own, he’s watching an all too similar scenario play out before his eyes. Only one person knows exactly what happened the night of the tragedy.

STYX
January 23, 2015

STYX - Tommy Shaw, James “JY” Young, Lawrence Gowan, Todd Sucherman and Ricky Phillips (along with the occasional surprise appearance by original bassist Chuck Panozzo), have performed more live since ’99 than all of the previous years of its career combined. Two Super-Bowl appearances, Pollstar Box Office chart-topping tours with Def Leppard, Journey, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Bad Company (to name only a few), two more studio albums and no end in sight, STYX continues to conquer the planet, one venue at a time.

Spawned from a suburban Chicago basement in the early ‘70s, Styx would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late '70s and early '80s, due to a fondness for big rockers and soaring power ballads.

Mega hits include: “Fooling Yourself,” “Come Sail Away,” “Blue Collar Man,” “Blue Collar Man,” “Too Much Time On My Hands,” “Crystal Ball,” “Grand Illusion,” “Lady,” “Miss America,” “Renegade”…….

Golden Dragon Acrobats “CIRQUE ZIVA”
January 29, 2015

“This unique cirque spectacular showcases traditional Chinese acrobats who dazzle with amazing feats of athleticism, daring heart-stopping stunts and the grace of their centuries-old art form.” –Broadway World

Danny Chang and his Golden Dragon Acrobats continue their relentless, 30+ year US touring schedule of centuries-old Chinese art form. Since 1985, they remain the only Chinese acrobatic company touring year-round in the United States, and present over 200 performances annually. In 2005, their Broadway debut and seven-week run at the New Victory Theater earned two prestigious New York Drama Desk Awards nominations (Angela Chang for Best Choreography and Danny Chang for Most Unique Theatrical Experience).

Answering the new market demand from US presenters, producer Danny Chang restructured the Golden Dragon Acrobats in 1998 to form Asian Artists Productions, Inc. or AAPI. While the new company continued to produce and tour the Golden Dragon Acrobats, AAIP expanded to create theatrically elaborate, resident-shows like Circo Magnifico, Dream, Pagoda, Cirque D’or and others, each for a specific US market.

"Cirque Zíva" is newest touring group from AAIP. The large cast and spectacular set designs illustrate the best of Chang's brand of artistic merit, high production value, and solid commitment to cultural exchange. Of special note is Cirque Zíva Lighting Director Tony Tucci, the recipient of two B. Iden Payne Awards and Critics Table awards for lighting, with credits including the video “Baryshnikov, Dancer and The Dance” and 1996 Summer Olympics Cultural Olympiad showcase.

DICK CAVETT
Stars in HELLMAN –v- MCCARTHY
March 1, 2015

An episode of The Dick Cavett Show (PBS) on which one literary giant Mary McCarthy, referred to another literary titan, Lilian Hellman as “dishonest” (and worse) sparked a war between the two women, with Hellman suing McCarthy, Cavett, and producing station WNET-TV.

Brian Richard Mori’s play has the two women confronting each other on Cavett’s TV show (this is the fictional part; although both appeared separately on Cavett’s program at different times, Hellman in real life died before a joint appearance could take place).  It makes for a fascinating dramatic “what if?”

Dick Cavett stars as himself, Flora Plumb plays Hellman.  Rowan Michael Meyer, from the original off-Broadway production, plays Ryan, Hellman’s caretaker.  Other cast members are to be announced.

The Theatre40 production unites Dick Cavett, iconic star of TV, Broadway and film and double Emmy winner, with another TV icon, director Howard Storm, one of the most prolific directors in the history of television, whose work included 59 episodes of “Mork and Mindy”.  In an earlier career, Storm was an A-list comic who appeared on The Dick Cavett Show in 1968.
